Guide to Electric Image Camera Error Messages

Almost all errors generated during rendering are given in the form of:

4-character Library Module, Error ID, Error number, File Path

The file path is optional and may not be given. Here is an example:

Camera Error: A system API function has returned an unexpected error
number. Library: ANIO Error ID:10 Error number: 1 File:D:\SharedVolume\Universe\hall_long.fac

The list below gives you the 4-letter Module designations followed by a list of error IDs with their detailed descriptions. The description will tell you what information is stored in the Error Number and if there is a file path given. Look in the table for MBLR, ID: 2. From the description, this error returns the “version number” in the Error Number and gives the file path to the blur buffer.

The ANIO example given above indicates that the file, hall_long.fac, couldn’t be opened for reading. It’s supposed to be located at the path D:\Shared\Volume\Universe\. Better check to make sure it is really there. Was it moved before rendering to some other location? Was the folder that contained it moved? Is the file on a server that is no longer mounted or available?

Some of these error messages indicate that Camera ran out of memory. Resolve these problems by allocating more memory to Camera. Information on increasing Camera’s memory allocation can be found in the ElectricImage Animator manual, pages 2 and 3.

Many of the errors related to disk drive I/O (input/output) on the Macintosh return a system error value in the Error Number. The common Mac OS/System error numbers are listed and described at the end of this document.

Errors not related to File I/O or Memory allocation can probably not be resolved without help from Electric Image technical support. Please contact us when these problems arise so we can assist you.

All of the Library Modules are common to both Mac and Windows EXCEPT ANIO and MCIO. ANIO is the Windows-specific file I/O library module and MCIO is the equivalent library module on the Mac.

Rendering

  • Reducing noise in GI animations

First, try reducing the GI sampling grid size to 4x4, the default is 8x8. This has more effect on noise then simply increasing the ray count.

If this does not help enough then try increasing the Colour Tolerance to something like 10.

Still no joy? Try the following:
    Increase the primary rays.
Add more dirt maps to your materials as this hides artefacts.
Double and triple check your intensity, higher intensity sky light = More noise.

As a rule of thumb, the minimum rays you should consider using for an animation is 200.

When you render your GI ray count tests (checking to see if you have enough rays) remember to turn Anti-Aliasing off, this won’t affect you ability to tell if the animation is noisy but it will speed up the render by about 10x.

  • Setting up Multi-Processor rendering with Renderama

    Set up the project

    1. Tick ‘Enable network rendering’ in the network tab of the render dialogueTotal frame strips > put two in here.
    2. Specify a name.
    3. Hit go and choose a locationAnimator will now write the control files.

    Set up the machine

    1. Set up two slave folders on your Mac, make sure they have duplicates of your plug and shader folders.
    2. Launch the renderama slave from each of the two slave folders.
    3. Change the port number from the default to something else (1617 or 1618… so the renderama slave ip should read something like 10.0.0.2:1617 - Quit the renderama slaves and load them up again.
    4. Open up renderama you should see your job name on the leftYou should also see a list of slaves on the right (probably only one at the moment called ‘Local’)
    5. Add your slaves IP’s to the slave list (IP address plus port)
    6. Turn the slaves on (little blue ball to the left of their names) and turn off the local camera.
    7. Hit go!

  • My render looks soft

In the Render information window, go to the Anti-Alias tab.

Once here, change your anti-alias mode from Oversample to Adaptive. This will sharpen your images.

To take the effect further, put “255” into the Minimum Adaptive Threshold box, this will put Camera into a special mode called “Averaging”. This will produce a very sharp image.

  • Improving Models Anti-Alias

    1) Selecting a group in the project window

    2) Double Click on it

    3) Shading Tab / Sampling pop-up

    4) Change from default 1x1 to 2x2 (you changed individually the Sampling only on this group)

    5) Clicking with right mouse button over the Sampling pop-up, you can change this setting to a selection of groups, to all, to children of this group and so on.

    6) In the Render window / Anti-Alias tab /

    7) You will have the Sampling level default as 1x1, which overwrite any group Sampling in your scene (previously changed to 2x2), but if you change the Sampling level pop-up to 2x2, all the models with sampling 2x2 will have a better Sampling Anti-Alias and all groups which you did not modify the Sampling in your scene, having the default 1x1, will be rendered as 1x1.

You will have Improved Anti-Alias controlled individually.

A Good Combo in Render Window / Anti-Alias Tab / is change the default settings 4x4 (Anti-Alias Level) 1x1 (Sampling level ) to 8x8 and 2x2 (dont forget to change your groups in your scene), but you will have a slower render time.

    :)

Texturing

  • Adjusting the alpha value of a colour

In the color picker window you will see some small boxes at the very top, these are the different mixers,RGB,HSV,CMYK,to use one of these just click on it and drag it down to the lower portion and release.I think the RGBA one is on the left side. This is a great feature that can be used in most of the shaders as well.

    Corpus

Note: In Electric Image 6.6+ the RGBA colour swatch is on by default.

  • Getting started with UV textures in Animator

    I’ll start with the basics.

Every vertex of a model has a “texture vertex” associated with it. As Camera is trying to figure out what a given pixel is supposed to look like, it does an interpolation of the texture vertices for the polygon it’s trying to render. It then uses this to look up the portion of the texture map with the corresponding UV value.

You can think of these texture coordinates as forming a sort of bear-skin rug. The rug is flat but used to be bear-shaped. Models with UV coordinates are sort of cut open and layed out flat. It’s up to the modelling software to decide what this looks like.

If you want to start playing with UVs, try some of the more complex UberShapes. The Torus is a great example. The torus is cut across and around the circumference and unfolded. The wireframe geometry you’ll see in the texture window is a flat plane. That wireframe is really the UVs.

The Cylinder does a square UV space for the long part and separate square spaces for the top and bottom.

Use the Check Grid texture to really understand the results (on the EIAS DVD).

Workflow

  • Setting an attribute to multiple objects

Answering the question: How do I set several of my objects to use Motion Vector Blur.

    1. Select all the objects you want to blur
    2. Set ONE of the objects to what ever setting you want, in this case motion vector blur
    3. Right click the option,
    4. A drop down contextual menu appear, choose “set selected”

Suport

  • How to report a bug

To report a bug, you need to provide the following information:

    Section 1: About your system

OS (eg. Mac OSX 10.5.2, Windows Vista etc.)
    CPU (eg. MacTel, G5)

    Section 2: About EI

    Version (eg. 6.5 or 701)
    Are you rendering via Renderama?

    Section 3: About the bug

Provide a list of steps to reproduce the bug, no matter how simple the bug seems, this is essential.

    For example:

    1. New project
    2. Add 3D text
    3. Type something
    4. Change font
    5. Change font (going one down the list repeatedly, as if to check what font looks good)
    6. Error will appear after 5-10 font changes.

Then, if it seems appropriate, please upload a project that reproduces the bug (this is again essential for Camera bugs).

Before you upload a project, remove as much as you can from the project without ‘fixing’ the bug. We call this ‘minimising the project’. In most cases you’ll want an archive smaller then 5mb.

Bugs can be fixed quickly if all the information listed above is given. If something is missing, the bug may take much, much longer to fix. An example of this is the ‘Crash on Save bug’ that appeared in 6.6 - many people reported it, but, without steps to reproduce it, as annoyingly for all nvolved, it seemed totally random. It wasn’t fixed, but then, 6 months later, a way to reproduce it was found - this long standing bug was then fixed within 24 hours.

    Hope this helps!
